Our Children : Washington
Together with his elder sister Blessing and brother Darlington, Washington has been with the Kristensens since 1994. An intelligent, sensitive child, he is very attached to them, being only 9 months old when they became his foster parents. After his mother died two weeks after giving birth to Washington, the father was unable to cope, and relatives failed to help with the children. Washington was found by social welfare in nappies several days old, and taken to hospital in a life-threatening condition due to lack of food. All 3 children were kept at a children’s home for 7 months, before coming into the custody of the Kristensens for four years before Ethandweni opened in November 1997.
In his first year with the Kristensens, he cried every time he realised the meal was about to finish, probably because of memories of too little food as a baby and at the children’s home in town. He still likes having something extra to eat with his foster parents, after the main evening meal with the other children at Ethandweni! He is now attending grade 7 and is doing well.
