Our Home

Our Home received a National Award for merit in 1999 from the Institute of Architects of Zimbabwe, on completion of the second phase of building by Matabeleland South Architects Partnership.

The jury reported that:

The poor and disadvantaged deserve a home that will give them a sense of security, shelter, protection and self-worth, just as the more affluent do. The architects here, at low cost, out of the simplest locally available materials, have created just such a home for AIDs victims and orphans.

Care has been taken in the siting of each building, in the provision of covered verandahs and enclosed outdoor spaces, to provide a comfortable living environment. Detailing of building components and built-in fittings is simply and appropriately done.

The result is a little group of buildings that sits comfortably in the landscape, and that could serve as a model for the rural low cost social housing that Zimbabwe so desperately needs.
