Our Home : for the community
We maintain close links with the community around us, and encourage our children to remain part of their own cultural environment as well.

A pre-school operates at the Home, with 72 children enrolled from 3-6 years of age, and coming from nearby villages (within walking distance). The three teachers are trained and provided by the government. It is run as a community project with its own parent-elected committee.

A supplementary feeding programme is provided to the pre-school children (milk, sadza, vegetables, multi-vitamin tablets).

Zimbabwe Red Cross train their local home-based care givers at the Home, where they also hold quarterly co-ordination meetings. These help us keep in touch with local needs, particularly the orphan situation in the community.

A workshop operates at the Home on weekdays, where basic repairs to equipment can be carried out. Typical items include wheelbarrows and scotch carts, axes, bicycles and pots. These day-to-day items would be expensive for local people to replace, or take to the nearest towns 60km away to repair. Token prices charged by the workshop are sometimes paid for with melons or sugar cane!

The local community has also benefitted from the dam and electricity power line built for Ethandweni.
